Attakk fuq il-liberta tal-espressjoni

Milli jidher twaqqaf il-programm li Salvu Mallia kellu fuq l-istazzjon tal-PN. Malli wara l-elezzjoni libes il-ġlekk u qal li ma għadux parti mill-PN, il-programm inqata’.

Ma smajtux jgħid li neħħewlu l-programm b’vendikazzjoni u biex jagħlqulu ħalqu għax qed iniggeż fil-laħam il-ħaj.

Partit magħluq u f’paniku

Minkejja li dan hu żmien li fih il-Partit Nazzjonalista jrid juri kemm huwa miftuħ u kemm jinsab lest għall-iskrutinju pubbliku wara telfa elettorali oħra,  għażel  li jiċċensura lill-mezzi tax-xandir milli jsewgu l-Kunsill Ġenerali għajr għad-diskors ta’ Simon Busuttil li fih irrepeta l-istess diska li waslet għad-disfatta tal-elezzjoni ġenerali.

Dan huwa sintomatiku ta’ Partit f’paniku u li jrid jingħalaq fih innifsu. Kuntenti huma, kuntent kulħadd.

Il-qgħad ikompli jonqos

F’Mejju li għadda, in-numru ta’ persuni fuq ir-reġistru tal-qgħad kompla jonqos għal 2,502, li huwa l-inqas ammont ta’ nies jirreġistraw mindu bdew jinġabru dawn il-figuri fis-snin sittin. Imqabbel ma’ sena ilu l-qgħad naqas b’1,009 persuni, filwaqt li meta mqabbel ma’ Marzu 2013 in-numru ta’ nies jirreġistraw huwa ta’ 4,848 inqas.

Dan ifisser li issa n-numru ta’ dawk jirreġistraw hu kważi terz dak li kien mal-bidla fil-Gvern.

Mill-2013, bħala medja, kull jumejn sitt persuni li kienu qiegħda sabu xogħol. B’kuntrast, matul il-ħames snin tal-amministrazzjoni preċedenti, bħala medja kull jumejn persuna aktar kienet tispiċċa tirreġistra.

It-tnaqqis qawwi fil-qgħad f’Malta u f’Għawdex qed jinħass l-aktar fost iż-żgħażagħ. F’din l-etá kien hemm tnaqqis ta’ 938 persuna qiegħda mill-bidla fl-amministrazzjoni. Miżuri bħall-garanzija għaż-żgħażagħ – dik li l-Oppożizzjoni ssejjaħ il-garanzija tal-washing machine – sa issa naqset in-numru ta’ żgħażagħ jirreġistraw b’75%.

Mill-bidla fl-amministrazzjoni kien hemm tnaqqis ta’ 1,815-il persuna f’dawk qiegħda ta’ età ta’ 45 sena jew aktar, kategorija ta’ nies qiegħda meqjusa fost l-aktar eskluża mis-suq tax-xogħol. Dan ifisser li, għal kull għaxar persuni ta’ 45 u aktar li kienu qiegħda fl-2013, illum hemm erbgħa.

Kategoriji meqjusin f’riskju soċjali wkoll urew titjib. Fost dawk li ilhom jirreġistraw għal aktar minn sena kien hemm tnaqqis ta’ 1,652 mill-bidla fil-Gvern. Dan kien frott miżuri biex dawk l-iktar esklużi mis-suq tax-xogħol jingħataw opportunitajiet ġodda biex itejbu l-livell ta’ għejxien tagħhom u jintegraw mill-ġdid.

Suċċess ieħor li nkiseb kien fost il-persuni b’diżabilità bla impjieg. F’Mejju dawn kienu naqsu għal 283 minn 564 fil-bidu tal-leġislatura li għaddiet. Dan it-tnaqqis ta’ nofs seħħ grazzi għall-miżuri ta’ inklużjoni u l-infurzar ta’ liġijiet favur persuni b’diżabilità.

In-numru ta’ Għawdxin jirreġistraw għax-xogħol naqas għal 452 f’Mejju li għadda minn 742 fil-bidu tal-2013 (-39%).

Qabel il-bidla fil-Gvern, 7,350 persuna f’pajjiżna kienu bla xogħol, żieda ta’ kwazi elf persuna f’ħames snin. Il-fatt li pajjiżna sa issa ra n-numru ta’ dawk jirreġistraw jaqa’ għal terz dak li kien fil-bidu tal-leġislatura li għaddiet huwa l-aqwa ċertifikat li Malta għandha ekonomija fejn il-ġid qed dejjem jasal għand aktar nies, speċjalment dawk l-aktar vulnerabbli.

Niktbu l-istorja mill-ewwel ġurnata

Wara ċ-ċerimonja tas-Sibt, illum jibda x-xogħol tal-Parlament. L-ewwel liġi li se nkunu qegħdin niddiskutu u fiż-żmien ġimgħa, ġimgħatejn inkunu kapaċi nieħdu vot fuqha hija l-liġi dwar żwieġ indaqs. Din il-liġi juri li għalina l-ugwaljanza m’hijiex x xi ħaġa kożmetika imma hija xi ħaġa ta’ konvinzjoni.

Għall-Partit Laburista l-ugwaljanza hija prinċipju, għalhekk il-mod ta’ kif qegħdin navviċinaw il-liġi taż-żwieġ indaqs tfisser li sal-llum kellna Unjoni Ċivili u issa se jkollna patt li se jissejjaħ żwieġ. Il-Prim Ministru Joseph Muscat qal il-bieraħ “Jien nieħu pjaċir li ż-żewġ partiti qablu dwar dan fil-manifesti elettorali tagħhom u allura mhux suppost ikun hawn kontroversja”. Għalkemm nafu li fil-Grupp Parlamentari hemm min għandu riservi kbar.

Mhux se naqbdu l-liġi tal-Unjoni Ċivili u nbiddlulha isimha, minkejja li kien hemm il-possibiltà, imma hekk konna nispiċċaw b’żewġ liġijiet, waħda għall-koppji mod u l-oħra għall-koppji mod ieħor li allura ma tfissirx li hemm ugwaljanza.

Il-Prim Ministru l-bieraħ spjega li se nemendaw l-att dwar l-Unjoni Ċivili u se nkunu nemendaw l-att oriġinali taż-żwieġ tal-1975 li kienet waħda mil-liġijiet il-kbar li għamel Dom Mintoff u li dak iż-żmien kienet kontroversja enormi li jkollok liġi taż-żwieġ taċ-ċivil.

Dik li se nibdew niddiskutu llum fil-Parlament hija liġi progressiva li se tkompli temenda dak li bena l-Partit Laburista tas-sebgħinijiet biex iż-żwieġ ikun ugwali għal kulħadd b’hekk il-prinċipju al-ugwaljanza se nibdew nattwawħ mill-ewwel ġurnata ta’ din il-leġiżlatura.

The problem is not her blog but her role and content

Much has been written, and will again of Daphne’s role in again bringing down the Nationalist Party to its worst ever defeat. The second consecutive one.
Doing it once might be down to bad luck. Doing it twice shows there is something wrong, very wrong and Malta knows it.
Nobody would criticise a genuine blog that exposed Malta’s ills, the trouble is it has degenerated into being perceived as the mouthpiece of the old PN guard, the guard that did not even want Claudio Grech to be elected. Hence, her role (although unofficially) within the party is a real problem to the PN, but no one dares to say so.
So the blog isn’t the problem, but its content really is.
It is full of nasty lies. She is even willing to frame a Prime Minister and ridicule him, his family and anyone associated with Labour. This is what they started and the end result? Simon Busuttil’s famous words, once again Daphne sent the PN “Dritt għal ġol-ħajt” and by the looks of it, she will continue with more of the same.

Podiatrist or Psychiatrist? It’s the same “white coat”

Time off from libel court: Daphne puts her feet up while leafing through a glossy magazine.

By the way, this is what you started.

Mill-kliem għall-fatti, illum tibda t-tieni leġiżlatura ta’ Joseph Muscat

Tajba Hector!

One year after Brexit

It’s a year since the British voted to leave the European Union. And what they unleashed was turmoil and uncertainty. David Cameron immediately quit as Prime Minister and has lay low since. HIs finance minister, George Osborne, quit politics too and is now the editor of the London Evening Standard. Mr Cameron’s successor, Theresa May, called a general election to strengthen her hand in Brexit negotiations but only managed to lose seats. Nigel Farage, who led the UK Independence Party, became a buddy of Donald Trump and is quite a media star both sides of the Atlantic, while, of course, still drawing a salary as an MEP.

Apart from lowering the value of the pound and bringing down a Prime Minister what has the Brexit vote achieved? Not a great deal, at least yet. Negotiations have barely begun and no one can paint a full picture of what the future relationship will be.

As the Prime Minister has made clear, the UK cannot have a superior deal to membership of the EU, so it has to be an inferior one. This is not about punishment. It’s more a case of if you don’t contribute, don’t expect all the benefits.

There’s no doubt that Malta and the UK will maintain a strong relationship. We are intertwined not just by history but the realities of today — business, medical treatment, tourism and family relationships to name a few.

But this is also an opportunity for Malta to promote itself as a great location for business. We have the English language and a pro-enterprise outlook and, unlike the U.K., will still be able to offer open access to a market of 500 million people. British based companies worried about the future are considering new bases in EU territory and we have excellent people in Malta Enterprise and the diplomatic service promoting Malta as the place to be.

Malta has a strong economy but we should always be inviting new investment and creating more and better jobs. If the Brexit vote taught us one thing it is that things can change rapidly and with each turn of events comes surprises

L-istituzzjonijiet ta’ pajjiżna ma jistgħux ikunu mżebilħa għall-interessi politiċi

Il-Qorti Kostituzzjonali, l-ogħla Qorti tal-pajjiż, fis-sentenza tagħha tas-16 ta’ Ġunju qalet li Marlene Farrugia ikkontestat l-elezzjoni bħala kandidata tal-PN u kienet eletta f’isem il-Partit Nazzjonalista, u li t-tielet partit ma jeżistix tant li ma ressaq ebda kandidat għall-elezzjoni. Il-Qorti żiedet tgħid li Marlene Farrugia ġiet eletta fl-interess tal-Partit Nazzjonalista.  Dak li jgħodd għal Marlene japplika wkoll għal Godfrey Farrugia.

Jagħddu jumejn, u nisimgħu lil Marlene Farrugia stess tiddikjara li hi u Godfrey Farrugia kienu eletti f’isem il-Partit Demokratiku. Dan hu t-tielet partit. Tan hu hekk li ż-żewġ Deputati tal-PD ma kienux inklużi fix-shadow cabinet ta’ Simon Busuttil.

Fil-fatt, smajna li se tinħoloq koalizzjoni oħra bejn il-PN u l-PD biex jiffurmaw l-Oppożizzjoni! Imma din m’hijiex sfida diretta lejn il-Qorti Kostituzzjonali?

Il-Qorti żiedet ukoll li l-votanti taw il-preferenza tagħhom lil Farrugia fuq il-lista tal-PN kellhom “moħħom mistrieħ li, għax ivvotaw għal kandidat fuq il-lista tal-PN, il-vot tagħhom ma kienx sejjer ‘jintilef’ għall-għanijiet tal-art. 52 tal-Kostituzzjoni”. Għalhekk il-Qorti kkonkludiet li l-votanti tal-PN ivvutaw lil Farrugia b’serħan il-moħħ li ma hemmx it-tielet partit.

Li issa jkollok żewġ Membri Parlamentari jisfidaw lill-ogħla Qorti tal-pajjiż b’dan il-mod ikun qed jippreċipita konfront bejn l-istituzzjonijiet. Wieħed ifakkar li Marlene Farrugia quddiem dik il-Qorti lagħbet logħba u ħadet pożizzjoni differenti waqt is-smiegħ tal-kawża dwar jekk kienx hemm it-tielet partit.

Min għandu għal qalbu d-demokrazija f’pajjiżna ma jistax jaċċetta dak li qed jiżvolġi. Hu nsult forsi l-aktar lejn l-eluf ta’ votanti tal-PN li fdaw bil-vot tagħhom lill-koppja Farrugia, li issa d-Deputati Farrugia qed jgħidulhom li l-vot tagħhom fil-fatt mar għall-Partit Demokratiku u mhux ghall-PN.

Din kienet strateġija li wieħed kien qed jantiċipaha waqt il-kampanja, li iżda l-PN ma sab ebda diffikulta` dwarha dakinhar għax ħass li l-koppja Farrugia kienu ndispensabbli għalih u kien lest jaċċetta kollox fid-disprament li kellu.

Kif jistgħu żewġ deputati arbitrarjament jiddikjaraw li qed idaħħlu fil-Parlament partit politiku li skont il-Qorti lanqas biss ikkontesta l-elezzjoni, u li ebda votant ma vvota għalih?  Is-sistema demokratika tagħna qed tiġi sfidata u redikolata. Sinifikanti aktar f’dan kollu s-skiet tal-Partit Nazzjonalista, l-awtur ta’ din is-sitwazzjoni serja li qed tiżviluppa.

Naturali, fid-dawl ta’ din id-dikjarazzjoni ċara tal-koppja Farrugia wara li ngħatat is-sentenza tal-Qorti Kostituzzjonali, li jiżdied id-diżappunt tal-poplu dwar kif il-PN ingħata żewġ siggijiet żejda fuq il-premessa li kien hemm żewġ partiti politiċi biss, u mmedjatament wara s-sentenza, d-Deputati Farrugia jgħidu li fil-fatt hemm it-tielet Partit.

Il-koppja Farrugia u l-PN iridu jifhmu iżda li l-Parlament ma jistax jiġi mżeblah b’arranġamenti ta’ konvenjenza biex wieħed jipprova jċekken il-kobor tal-kriżi maħluqa mill-Partit Nazzjonalista fl-ogħla istituzzjoni ta’ pajjiżna, bid-decizjonijiet irresponsabbli meħuda tul il-kampanja elettorali. B’koalizzjoni ta’ konfuzjoni li qed tikkaratterizza l-Oppożizzjoni. Il-poplu tagħna u l-istituzzjonijiet ta’ pajjiżna jixirqilhom aħjar.

Labour’s red letter days

Many calendars indicate special dates and holidays in red instead of the usual black ink, a tradition from medieval times.

The expression having a red letter day means that someone is having a special day, a day to remember, a day that stands out from the rest of the crowd.

The labour party has much to be proud of, and therefore it would make sense to have its own calendar with its achievements marked out in red as a proud reminder for the younger and future generations.

If we were to mention Mintoff’s achievements there would be the 13th December and 31st March as huge milestones, together with the introduction of the welfare state that brought in benefits such as the 40 hour week, the right for women to continue working after marriage, 2/3 pensions, free medical care, free education, decriminalisation of homisexuality, stipends for students, children’s allowance, social housing, home ownership schemes, half yearly bonuses and much much more.

The achievements under Joseph Muscat are just too many to mention here and would read like a litany. A glimpse at the manifesto is enough to blow you away.

So, is someone out there willing to take up the challenge of finding each day when these benefits were introduced and marking them on a calendar? I am sure that the calendar would end up mostly in red ink.

Konferma: Ganga Style PN – Chris Said għal Kap

S’issa kien għadu ħadd ma kkommetta ruħhu għat-tmexxija tal-PN. Iżda Chris Said nafu li se jkun wieħed mill-kandidati għal din l-elezzjoni. Kif nafu? Għax Wayne Hewitt kixef l-intenzjonijiet tal-Avukat Għawdxi qabel għamilhom pubbliċi hu stess.

Said kien qed jistenna il-mument opportun biex iħabbar il-kandidatura tiegħu, u Hewitt ħadlu t-tapit minn taħt saqajh. Bi Hewitt, Chris Said għandu rasu mistrieħa u spalla fuq x’hiex jistrieħ.

Kandidati oħrajn u canvassers tagħhom qed joqgħodu lura milli jesprimu l-intenzjonijiet tagħhom.

Guest Post: Archbishop wakes up!

Well well well. We have had two weeks of Daphne’s usual invective and hatred against PL people. Somewhat more muted then usual because she is a loser who was egging PN supporters on to think they had won. Archbishop remains quiet and discreet.

And these same” ajma marelli “PN supporters who woke up to the shock reality that they were 40,000 down on what they needed and had convinced nobody except their snobby selves that the PN was worth being elected again.

So now the Archbishop woke up to hate speech because Tony Zarb like the absolute majority of Maltese, are heartily sick of PN people trying to rubbish Malta’s reputation abroad.

This Archbishop did not condemn Daphne who has single handedly condemned the PN to their worst two electoral defeats. He condemned those who spoke against Malta’s traitors.
Words fail us but luckily we won the important battle.

This is not hate speech

Call it what you want but don’t label it hate speech since it is the work of Paul Borg Olivier, former PN Secretary Generali and husband to Simon Busuttil’s secretary.

Had we done something similar, even the Archbishop would raise his eyebrows and speak out against hate speech. Not to mention other PN trolls in astonishment for such hate mongering.

What a bunch of losers with a big L.

David Thake jimmira ‘l fuq, saħansitra għal Kap

Il-PN ħallih barra mill-Parlament meta għażel liema distretti se jkunu ċeduti minn Deputati eletti minn żewġ distretti, imma David Thake irid imexxi.

Fil-ġurnali dawk msejħa ‘indipendenti’ kien qed jissemma’ mis-sorsi tal-PN bħala wieħed mill-kontendenti biex imexxi l-PN wara Simon Busuttil jew nkella għal xi kariga oħra għolja fil-PN. Imma l-ewwel irid jiddeċiedi x’se jagħmel Simon Busuttil.

Meta mistoqsi mill-ġurnali dwar l-aspirazzjonijiet tiegħu għat-tmexxija,  bħall-oħrajn, ma xtaqx jikkummenta!

Fost l-ewwel affarijiet li jrid ibiddel David Thake hemm il-mod kif jintgħażlu li jsiru l-elezzjonijiet każwali. Wara li l-PN ħallih barra milli jkollu ċans, appella li tinbidel is-sistema tal-elezzjonijiet każwali għax qal li s-sistema preżenti m’hijiex ġusta. Mhux ġusta għax naturalment ħallewh barra.

Pawlu Borg Olivier kien pront jirrispondih u fuq Facebook kiteb:

PN Executive decisions and Casual Elections:-

I have served in the Executive for some 20 years up till 2013 and can assure everybody that decisions taken by the executive on who gives up which seat in parliament were all taken with responsibility after mature discussion on the matter and in the bigger interest of the party.

I remember one instance when decisions were taken to increase gender balance. Many were taken aback by the decision but it was good and the gender spread was better. That is why I criticised Therese Commodini Cachia on her decision (now reversed) to give up her local seat in Parliament. What the party did back then in the Executive in favour of gender balance, the electorate did it this year in the elections.

I really don’t know why all this fuss is being made in this time round when the casual election procedures have been working effectively throughout the years on both sides of the political spectrum..

We cannot change rules just because one or two people come to complain in facebook which is a virtual hyde park corner, or simply because one was not elected in a first attempt at the polls.

Eddie Fenech Adami missed an election and a casual election only to be co-opted in Parliament.

It took tonio Borg THREE elections of 1981, 1987 and 1992 to be casually elected in parliament in 1992.

Lawrence gonzi failed the 1987 election only to return to the polls in 1996.

We all know how their political terms in parliament developed.

I am sick of seeing comments made by failed candidates or others harping on their numbers with useless spin intended only for personal interests. Politics is not an IceCream Parlour.

I am saddened to see that notwithstanding a commission to assess candidates before approval, too many self-centred comments and actions have come to the fore in the last weeks that have done nothing but harm to the candidates themselves and to a party that needs to be kept together to keep focused on the bigger pictures.

Kummenti li qajmu kjass mal-partitarji tal-PN bil-kummenti tagħhom maqsumin bejn appoġġ għal Borg Olivier jew għal min irid ibiddel is-sistema preżenti għax il-kandidat favorit tiegħu ma kienx elett.

L-istat ta’ konfużjoni li jinsab fih bħalissa l-PN huwa bla preċedent, il-kriżi li kellhom qabel l-elezzjoni kompliet aggravat u ħadd ma jaf min jista’ joħroġhom minnha. Ta’ l-anqas David Thake għamilha ċara li jrid jaqbad il-barri minn qrunu u jmexxi.
